The short story ...
The metropolis of Seoul, my home for over 2 decades, featuring, the landmark Namsang Tower which appears in the backdrop of many a K-drama.
How I pronounce my first name: [dəlan]
I am a Higher Education researcher with a special interest in multilingualism and language education. In my research, I use critical sociological perspectives to explore the effect that the interplay between agency and structure has on language use in education. From this, my research interests straddle EMI (English-Medium Instruction), TESOL, internationalisation, multilingualism, and social justice - all in the area of Higher Education.
To date, my research has focused on the South Korean context having resided there for over two decades, mainly working as a Teaching Professor at Seoul National University. However, in early 2023 I began a lectureship with Queen Mary University of London working in the School of the Arts where I teach on the TESOL MA. My research is now expanding to explore the experiences of international students in the UK Higher Education sector, amongst other research pursuits. I also serve as a co-convenor of the Society for Research in Higher Education (SRHE) Multilingual University Network.
I am very interested in supervising PhD students in the area of Higher Education that focus on any of the following: Language Education, EMI (English Medium Instruction), Multilingualism, Internationalisation, Social Justice, or Language Policy.
